Experimentation

So I changed my spec from this spec, to this one
No more NS, no more tranquility, with replenish. And I tried out the HT glyph.

The glyph is quite nice, sure, you don’t have that nice punch anymore, but you do have a 1 second, or in my case 0.95s. The problem about that however is the fact that the GCD of Healing Touch is still longer than the casttime – which can be annoying and will stop you from spamming.

Anyway, with replenish triggered by Rejuvenation, and Healing Touch being glyphed, I needed to find a way to put them in my rotations and healing style. So I shuffled around the actionbar, but I have to admit it’s not easy to make an adjustment like that.

My Top 3 heals in a normal instance (Sethekk Halls with a Moonkin “tank”) were 1. Lifebloom, 2. Wild Growth, 3. Healing Touch. After that came Rejuvenation, Regrowth, Living Seed, Glyph of Rejuvenation. Lifebloom doing 43% healing, and the rest under 20%. (Makes you wonder if Living Seed is even worth the 3 points, but guess you’ll need to use Regrowth more for that talent)

This while my healing during the last raid was equally shared around 30% for Regrowth, Lifebloom, Wild Growth.

Now, here’s the thing about Replenish. It gives 1% of base mana to the one you cast it upon (on a 15% chance roll, mana is given at the moment you cast it), which gave everyone around 400-500 mana for the entire instance run. I can’t say I’m exactly pleased by that number, and I reckon Replenish was really designed for level 80′s their base mana.

But nonetheless, if I’m able to get Rejuvenation more inbetween my regular healing, the mana returned by it may be beneficial.

Oh well… I’ll have to tweak my actionbar and fingers crossed for the next raid…

Post-patch experiences…

I’ve had the opportunity to test my new druidic abilities in raids. I was able to tank heroic SL and MT Karazhan, and heal in Sunwell and Black Temple. For the sake of having something to talk about, here are my thoughts.

Tanking along the side of Wolpertinger

As our first endevour after the patch we tried to take on normal SL. When we discovered it took us 2 seconds to kill a mob, we turned around and reset the instance to heroic. The armor changes however left me skinny, hairless and cold (I personally dropped 10% in mitigation against lvl 70′s). In heroic Shadow Labyrinth I felt horribly squishy, but then again, we barely had any CC at the time. The healer was able to keep me up, and we killed everything in our sight, but it still left me wondering.

I decided to get 2 extra dodge enchants, the Arcanum of the Defender as my head enchant (at first I had AP/hit), and some agility to gloves. With those extra few percentages added to dodge we eventually ended up in Karazhan. With some shifting around of actionbarbuttons, I made a nice setup that put Barkskin within easy reach, some healing potions, berserk, survival instincts and healthstones. I probably used Barkskin the most, and I paid ‘even more’ attention to refresh Demoralizing Roar and Infected Wounds.

Now that I got a bit used to the new way of tanking, I’m “ok” with the changes to our tanking, but there’s still one specific thing bugging me: Protector of the Pack. PotP only stacks up to 4, making us mitigate 12% damage done to us. I know it won’t happen, but on magical enemies, I wouldn’t mind if it was decided to update that talent to stack up to 5 (so, to include the druids themselfs as well), making it 15%. Alas, wishful thinking – we’ll just have to keep stacking stamina alongside of agility.

Tick, tick, tick, poof, you’re healed

I recently changed my professions to leatherworking and skinning, which I happened to skill up to 375 on the day of the raid, and I was able to make something from our unused recipe to make Shoulderpads of Renewed Life. Together with some BoJ pants, I was able to get some haste that made my healing just that little bit more nicer. And after that we were off to SWP with about 20-23 pre-T5 people (meaning, we shouldn’t even be there if this was pre-patch, but we’ve been there before anyway just to see what’s out there).

I pretty much instantly fell in love with Wild Growth, eventhough it really doesn’t heal “That” much, it’s extremely useful for these raids to just gives us time to heal up everyone with other spells (Regrowth!) without someone dying. And beside clean wipes because of the fact that we didn’t know how to pull things yet, deaths were extremely rare.

After a few hours playing with trash, we decided to call it and head for Black Temple (we didn’t want to go to MH because we only had 3 tanks available for the abominations etc). With 21 raiders we went to Naj’entus and ended up getting him to 20% after a few attempts and tweaks. The main issue (beside people not clicking on the spines and not launching them either) was primarily mana regeneration. Even after 1 mana potion and a self-innervate (which brought me up to 100% most of the time), I ended up being OOM – and death followed quickly after the other healers had the same issues.

Obviously the use of 3-4 different spells and the changes to LB cuts into your mana like butter. Never being able to go outside 5SR didn’t exactly help either. So I’m at odds what to do now, be it stat-changes to gear, speccing Replenish or other tweaks to my talents – I do not know. Unfortunately I wasn’t able to use drums either, because I forgot to bring them.

So I’m going to concentrate on eleviating the mana problem, but not sure where to start…

I’m also considering whether or not to take the Healing Touch glyph.. maybe I should just try it out some time..

Char investment guide: Gearing up

What’s this about?

In leveling 2 characters of my own to 70, and helping others to gear up theirs, I have picked up one or two things about investing time and effort in your character to make it raid-ready. Although not everyone will agree with me; if you don’t have the time to run instances day-in-day out, and you don’t have insane amounts of cash, or time to gather materials – this guide might be of help to you.

Why should I invest time in my characters gear for raids?

Raiding is all about teamwork. And for that team to be able to beat content without being over-geared, everyone in that team has to pull their own weight as much as they possibly can. One of these bags you have to carry is having gear with the right stats at an appropriate level. If you invest time and effort into your gear, and invest in wiping and learning new content, beating it will be much more satisfactory than actually looting the purple items.

Where were we…

You’re level 70 (or perhaps level 80) and you feel the need to optimize your gear for end-game raiding content. You’ve done some quests and instances here and there, but nothing constructive, as you just wanted the XP to level. There’s absolutely nothing wrong with that. If you’re a DPS class, or have specced DPS for the purpose of leveling, the fastest way you can level, is through quests. And questing fortunately is not always gear-dependent; you do not need that fancy Rare blue item from instance X, or that expensive craftable item.

Where to start?

Gearing up is all about “Tweaking” the stats that are important to your class and role that you will be filling on raids. If gearing up would be about getting the best possible gear in the game, Blizzard would have removed all other gear and made your character stats constant, but it’s not like that.

The key to tweaking your gear in as little time as possible, your best bet is to stay offline for a moment and search the web as to where you might be able to get upgrades. Websites like Wowarmory, Thotbott and Wowhead all have special search-pages where you can find upgrades for a certain slot.

… wait a minute, those websites also say I need to farm instance/heroic XYX!

Yes, but they’re wrong. The thing you should know about those websites is that they compare items by the ItemLevel. Theoretically, the higher the iLvl, the better the item, because higher stat numbers are included into that item. This however isn’t always the case, and if you really want to be raid ready as soon as possible, just forget about the iLvls, and concentrate on the stats you need.

So what am I searching for?

You have to search Specifically for Quest Rewards, and the specific slot. Start with the slot that you think has the poorest stats of all.

Let me make it easy for you, the two hardest slots to fill for any class are; wrist, waist and trinket. After those come shoulders, head and hands, and only after that comes the other slots.

Example?

Say you’re the proud owner of a Astralaan Belt of the Invoker and you never found a replacement up until you leveled to 70. You shouldn’t be ashamed of owning it, it’s really not that bad of an item. But you can tweak that slot.

Search your replacement with this link. If you want it for another slot, locate the slot in the menu, and make sure you add and apply the filter that says “Rewarded by a quest? Yes!”.

Click on Level to sort by iLvl, just in case you get some really bad items in between the good ones.

Go through the list Manually, and Ignore everything that has an instance mentioned. Naxxramas? Ignore. Mana-Tombs? Ignore. If you want to be even more wise, just ignore all Blue/Rare items. Even though the best item will probably be A’dal’s Gift or Akama’s Sash – they’re not the easiest items to obtain as they involve long quest-chains and instances (in these cases Botanica, Mechanar and Arcatraz).

Decide what you’re looking for the most part, are you into Spelldamage and Stamina, do you want Spellcrit, do you want Intellect, do you want more spirit for mana regen?

One of the options is a very special item called Grom’tor’s Bloodied Bandage. If you click on it, you’ll see it’s a reward from a quest. Click the Quest and you’ll see in which chain it lies. Click on the 1st quest in the chain (Grom’tor, Son of Oronok) and check in the comments if you need to do a prequest, and there are (startpoint is The Hand of Gul’Dan). Do you have time for that lengthy questchain? If no is the answer to that question, go back to your searchpage.

How about Chief Engineer’s Belt? Trace it back, and you’ll notice a questchain that is easily done in under 30 minutes (You’re Hired!) which happens to reward you with another tough slot to fill: Junior Technician 3rd Grade Goggles.

Am I really prepared for raiding with a crappy Green questitem?

I’m sorry, but the colour of your gear has nothing to do with the level of content you are prepared for. It’s not like you’ll be raiding Sunwell anytime soon, but this item will be your next direct upgrade, and with that crappy green item you support your team the Best way you can without having to gamble and waste time on special instance drops.

Any other hints?

If you’re a dps class, look into stats like Hit and Spellhit rating, they can help you optimize your dps when AP, crit or spellpower fail to do their jobs. If you’re a tank, Defense before you go anywhere dangerous, but I’m not going to bore you with the details – as they’re widely spread amongst many blogs already.

So should I replace item X for item Y, which one is better?

I’ll go into that in the next part of the guide I plan to write.

Changing Professions

With the upcoming expansion, one may wonder how to prepare and how to get the most out of your character. My initial profession from level 1 through 70 was Alchemy, suppported by Herbalism. I have always thought it to be an Ok choice, mana potions were always nice to have, and elixirs for instances and raids were a nice a bonus. When I discovered that the Primal Mooncloth set was incredibly powerful for healing, I was afraid it was too late to change and I stuck with Alchemy. But as my banks and bags were starting to pile up from resto-, balance-, cat- and bear-gear, I was struck by a large club to my head that tricked me into replacing herbalism by mining. I have no clue what I was thinking, really. I got mining to 375, but it felt utterly useless.

I felt the expansion was a nice excuse to just start over from scratch, and with the changes to gear in spellpower, haste, crit, etc. Leatherworking might be the best choice for me personally. Admittedly it’s not the easiest thing there is, eventhough I don’t need have to farm exotic old world and tbc patterns, it requires an insane amount of materials to skill up – which eats through my budget like woodworm.

I just hope the prices of pots and elixirs won’t be unreasonably high when I need them…

pre-wotlk drama

Our guild is currently suffering from a complete lack of interest and online activity when it comes to raids. With WotLK still 2 months away, people are using the WotLK or Warhammer Online card to get away from WoW – and especially from raiding anything difficult.

I’m not the type of person that really gets this, it’s just not anywhere in my trail of thoughts. Reasons like that most gear will be obsolete when the greenies drop have been used a lot. I’m no expert of WotLK, but I know that post-MC epics lasted pretty long from 60-70, T3 (not that anyone had a full T3 set when TBC hit) was even suitable for beginners lvl 70. And even so, if it’s really a purple dumping campaign all the way, why should it be a reason to ruin the actual point of the game; to progress further, to see new things, and to work together to accomplish these things. Gear is a means to get somewhere, not a goal.

So yeah, the only sense of fun in-game nowadays is to be part of simple kara runs and casual instance runs and trying not to get too upset when 20+ raids don’t go through or get ruined by random nuisances and arguements.

Release date WotLK

The release date has been announced of WotLK. We can create those mental pictures of waiting next to the mailbox or standing crunched and tired before the entrance of your local gaming store to pick up your copy of Wrath of the Lick King on the 13th of November.

Meanwhile however, the talent trees get changed every week, and it seems worrying that the changes are so different from their previous changes and seem horribly random for the purpose of testing and seeing how it goes.

Take for example the changed to the Improved Tree of Life talent. It was previously:

“Increases your Armor while in Tree of Life Form by 33%, and reduces the mana cost of your heal over time spells while in Tree of Life Form by an additional 5%” – 3 pts (5/10/15%)

and it was recently changed to:

“Increases your Armor while in Tree of Life Form by 33%, and increase your healing spell power by 5% of your spirit while in Tree of Life Form” – 3pts (5/10/15%)

Now, don’t get me wrong, the second one seems to scale a bit more and it seems more useful to me personally. It is however regrettable that extra measures have to be tweaked for mana reduction. It’s also more of an incentive (as it was previously before the normal ToL form aura) to itemize with spell power with spirit instead of spellpower with mp5.

So whilst we’re hoping that this change will not be nerfed, because it’s a good change, I cannot help but imagine they will do that next week or next month.

But, it doesn’t matter in the end. I’m confident they’re going to make druidness in WotLK just as fun as in TBC. So I’ll be waiting next to the mailbox and do my research on stats, talents, itemization, instances and all that jazz, whilst trying not to get too confused by all these periodic changes.

Just my luck

When I said this blog won’t be as reliable as the wordpress.com one, I didn’t mean to be 3 days unavailable. But alas, the broadband modem broke down and I’m without Internet until the replacement modem arrives accompanied by a smart person that can fix these kind of things. And after that I’ll probably have to check a zillion settings and DNS entries.

By the time you read this, it will probably be fixed and back to normal again until I have to replace the UPS for the servers, as I saw it plummet down to 20% of power within 10 seconds when I did a test with it.

My new home

Hello, and welcome to my new blogging home.

It looks exactly the same, but it’s not, I will probably tweak and update a thing or two the coming weeks.

The thing that I’ve already added, and probably one of the main reasons why I moved here, is the item-links [My Fancy Item of Strength].

WotLK: Respec moment

With the opcoming WotLK expansion (or probably a patch before that even) the new talent trees will appear, and you’ll have the opportunity to rethink your spec. Now, normally you would take that opportunity to make a nice quest-and-level-up-solo-build to race around through Northrend, but my plans are a bit different.

Our guild is currently thinking about continuing to schedule some raids now and then to Outland instances, to keep us together and to see a bit more of the content we were supposed to see. Now, one could figure that leveling up, getting to 71 to throw away crushes, getting some green superior questgear and be done with it. I say nay, that’s not going to cut the cookie the way I want it. And since the talent tree changes are coming with a pre-wotlk-patch, I wanted to see if I could make a cookie-cutter that wouldn’t require me to start questing like a madman just yet. (just filling up space and trying to look like I’m talking about something interesting, while I could’ve just said all of this probably in one sentence)

So, the raiding resto level 70 build I will prefer and try out, will be this one.

What did I select, and why didn’t I take that fancy thingymabob!

The import part of the build, is Flourish (Edit 19/09/’08: namechange nerfed and namechange to Wild Growth). I’ve seen a lot of raid damage when visiting TK/MH/BT/SUN and I’m not exactly pleased with the way I have to spam and rush Regrowth on everyone like a madman just because we lack CoH priests. Flourish is a spell to Nourish, I reckon. (although the actual Nourish spell will only appear at lvl 80 unfortunately)

Master Shapeshifter is a NoNo in my books. It’s 4% healing modifier is not going to cut the cookie with the ‘low’ amounts of healing in comparison to what we could get out of it when we’re in lvl 80 gear. The more we level of course, we are going to put points in it, but as long as we’re in 70′s gear it’s not going to make a difference.

Gift of the Earthmother is one fancy talent. Not only has it a pretty Tree icon, but with 5 points you’re going to shorten your GCD for Lifebloom and Rejuvenation Without investing anything in spellhaste. (2/4/6/8/10% – without additional Haste, your GCD’s will be as followed: normally 1.5s, 2% 1.47s, 4% 1.44s, 6% 1.41s, 8% 1.38s, 10% 1.35s)

Edit 18/09/’08: This talent has been changed to 4/8/12/16/20%, meaning your GCD will be reduced to 1.2s with 20%.

Living Seed sounds fun. With only 3 points you get the guarantee to seed the target - after a direct heal on crits - that blooms and heals the target when it gets hit. So, hello Druid PoM. (although we have no clue about threat ofcourse, it’s certainly going to be fun)

Replenish, is something for the future. Energy, rage, runes, mana to others? Odd talent, but will certainly be worth taking. But not just yet.

Omen of Clarity, yes we know it’s not going to cut the cookie really. But a free spell is a free spell, even though we know we’re going to get the Clearcasting buff mainly after when we actually needed it…

What about the Balance talents?

Genesis a direct 1-5% boost to your HoT healing, no strings attached and its available for everyone. The problem about this talent is, again, scaling. It’s not going to scale as much on your lvl 70 gear than at lvl 80′s gear. Still, it’s a nice talent, and if you want more of a resto-balance-hybrid-build, go for it.

Moonglow is going to save you plenty of mana, but question is, do you really need it?

Nature’s Splendor is rocking the socks off of some people, and I can certainly see its worth as well. However, at the current time, I’m pretty used to the length of my hots, and seldomly rely on their full length. Maybe that makes me a bad druid, but I know I’m going to regret not putting the points into restoration.

Nature’s Grace is well, cool. Ah well…

And most importantly, let us not forget to rush to the trainer and get our OoC rez, quick raid recovery here we come!

And then the raid is over, we did it, but back to questing

And back to feral.

Yes, I'm back

I’ve been leveling up my mage forever, but the last 10 levels were extremely quick. I even went from level 66 to 70 in only 2 days.

So now I’m a proper mage with green and blues, and the Shadoweave Boots & Shoulders. Its going to take a few more days before I can make the Robe, because I need to skill up tailoring first and collect the needed materials, but I’m sure I’ll make it someday. So currently I’m walking around with about 560 Frostdamage, 74 Spellhit and somewhere between 13% spellcrit. It’s not exactly top notch, but I’m sure that along the way to get the Karazhan key I will get a few upgrades that will set me up to be able to kill Attumen in a raid with fellow noobs.

The reason why I want to get the key, even though it isn’t needed anymore, is just to get a real feel of my mage in instances and see if I can do what it takes. Sure I’ve played with it some time, and I know how everything works, but the only real instances I’ve done so far with a mage are Sethekk halls and Shadow Labyrinth. Sure, SL wasn’t a piece of cake, I mis-sheeped a couple of times, failed to counterspell at vital moments, and I was mostly saved by an extremely well-geared priest – but still, it required some amount of effort and I learned a lot there which I wouldn’t learn by doing dailies or other quests. Not to mention the ability to actually walk into karazhan without any shaperon with a key, and the possibility to get the Violet Badge, which comes quite handy in a few boss fights.

In general it’s a lot of fun to play a mage though, much more fun than being an undergeared dps caster whilst in healing gear on my druid. Plus, it’s cheaper than respeccing all the time to feral when having to grind something. I’ll still be raiding and healing with my Druid primarily, but it’s nice to have another level 70 whenever you need a change.

So… Yes, I have returned to WoW after a hiatus of 3 months. I’ve been playing again for a couple of weeks now. I initially planned to only play friday-sunday, but that soon blew up in my face when I felt the itch to help out the guild in gruul/mags/ssc/tk. We even had some shots in MH, BT and Sunwell, and eventhough they’re quite a challenge, it’s still fun to see us get at whatever trashpull we are and see us progress wipe after wipe.

I’m definitely going to try and take it easy again though, but the weekend only thing doesn’t work obviously.

So there, voila, a post from scratch. I had nothing to talk about, but here it is.
